On the fairways

New Ross Seniors: On quite a pleasant spring day in the month of February, 14 teams took part in our weekly competition on Thursday. We even had some nice breaks of warm sunshine at times which added to the enjoyment.
As usual, competition was razor keen but again we had one team running away with the spoils and outscoring all opposition to take home the 'Paddy' whiskey.
After the presentation of prizes there was a belated stewards' enquiry later that night (not involving the winning team) where one of the runners-up teams should have been disqualified for recording a total score for 19 holes instead of the 18 which they played.
How that discrepancy got by the card checker is a mystery to say the least. If the said gentleman was to get a job checking the forthcoming General Election tallies, there sure would have to be a lot of re-counts.
A correct total score of 95 points was sufficient for John Browne (12), Bob O'Dwyer (19), Shay Masterson (19) and Martin Forristal (21) to be clear winners. Five points behind in second place on 90 points came Paddy Shannon (10), Ger Freyne (17), Paul Laffan (20) and Tony Sexton (26).
The third spot went to the three-person team of Steve Travis (18), Richie Aylward (18) and Jim 'Dublin' Ryan with 88 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Noel Dunne on the ninth hole and Mick Long on the eleventh.
We have no outing next Thursday (February 18) as the Valentine classic is on that day and for the weekend. You book your own four-person team on the timesheet, and the normal game and time for us is back on Thursday, February 25.
The Seniors group send their sincere condolences to the Kehoe family on the recent death of Paddy who was a popular colleague of our Thursday outings for many years. We gave the late multi-talented sportsman a truly sporting send-off last Thursday with a sustained standing ovation in his memory - may his gentle soul rest in peace.
