A bigger than average contingent travelled to Santry to compete in the National Senior track and field championships.

Many young athletes from Wexford competed at the top level in this country and, although not all medalled, they all gave a good account of themselves.

Marco Pons from D.M.P. won gold in the discus, while Tom Furlong of D.M.P. finished third in the hammer and won the bronze medal.

Michael Bowler, the international multi-eventer from Enniscorthy, won bronze in the pole vault, while Elizabeth Egan of Bree collected bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase. Menapians won bronze in the men's 4 x 100m relay.

Day one of the county Senior track and field championships is on Wednesday, July 6. Registration is 6.30 p.m. in Enniscorthy Sports Hub, with day two on July 13 at the same place and time. This is an open competition to registered members of A.A.I.

The Brother Egan Cup will be presented to the best club in Senior women's and men's events only. Two great evenings of competition are in prospect.

The Athletics Wexford summer camp is on July 12, 13 and 14 at the Hub from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration will close on July 5 at 6 p.m.
