Next week Shane Bates from Brendan Corish Gardens in Wexford town will play in the world Under-21 snooker championships in Bucharest in Romania.

Shane, who plays out of the 147 Club on the Main Street, will compete against the best young players from all around the world, with the eventual winner of the championship being awarded a two-year ticket to play on the professional tour against the likes of Ronnie O'Sullivan and John Higgins.

Shane had an outstanding season, finishing number one on the Irish Under-21 rankings. He is practising hard with his famous clubmate, Rodney Goggins, who won the world title back in 1999.

The son of Bridget Bates and Robert Roberts had a training camp with the Irish team last week in the Ivy Rooms. Shane's coach and also national coach P.J. Nolan, who is from New Ross, said: 'Shane is playing great snooker and he had a great season. Playing in this Under-21 championships will be a great experience for this talented Wexford boy'.

Shane would like to thank the 147 Snooker Club in Wexford and A & R Cues for their valuable support.
