Wanderers lose on travels
The Wexford Wanderers Senior men's XV travelled to Roscrea on Sunday to face the Leinster League 2B pace-setters who were unbeaten going into this tie.
Roscrea 24 Wanderers 15
The Wexford side, starting to feel the effects of a growing injury list, began the game with a number of changes from the previous week's encounter with Athy which Wexford won 19-12.
The game started well for the Wexford men with a try from captain Seán O Corcora after eight minutes which went unconverted. This was after sustained pressure from the visitors who rucked the home side relentlessly until they crossed the whitewash.
Ten minutes later, and after a similar period of rucking John Rowe doubled the lead with another try which went unconverted. At this stage and with a ten-point gap, Roscrea started to fire into the contest and after some scrappy play close to the Wanderers line they managed to pounce over for a converted try.
Just before the break they stole the lead when their backs managed to breach the Wexford midfield and ran away to score another try, leaving the score at 12-10.
In the second period, and with a number of Wexford players succumbing to injury (including the find of the season, Liam Barry), Roscrea started to impose their will on the game, with a third try increasing the score to 17 before adding another converted try to lead 24-10 heading for the finish.
However, Wanderers managed to secure a consolation try through the excellent Robbie Kenny which was unfortunately unconverted. The disappointment of losing this contest for Wanderers was compounded by the lack of success with the boot which denied them the potential of a losing bonus point, while Roscrea secured the win points and bonus point for the four tries scored. The final score was 24-15.
Next Sunday sees the final Senior match for 2015 at Park Lane when Birr come visiting. The visitors are well known to Wanderers as both sides have been evenly matched in league competitions for the past number of seasons.
The Wanderers' annual Christmas party for parents, coaches, volunteers and friends has been re-scheduled for Saturday, December 12 (note change of date) in the clubhouse. For the details of what is happening in the club, follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
