Firsts secure important away victory
Wednesday February 24 2010
JOB DONE for Wexford, a Leinster League win away from home. The end scoreline was not an issue on this occasion but the result was all important.
With 20 minutes to the scheduled kick-off, it was still being debated whether the game would go ahead such was the condition of the pitch. The playing surface was covered with snow and ice and the line demarcation was barely recognisable.
The game did proceed, however, and Wexford achieved what they set out to achieve. In the end Wexford scored two tries, both coming from the backs.
Again, the forwards dominated and afforded the Wexford side the lion's share of the possession.
The first try came from Mikey Hanrahan who has been a very strong player for the Wexford firsts, bringing all of his football skills and athleticism to the side week in, week out. This was Mikey's last encounter for Wexford in the current season as he soon sets off for Australia.
All at Wanderers wish him well and look forward to greeting him home to the side at some stage in the future.
Wexford's second try came from the talismanic Maurice Logue who again added to his try tally. Despite Wexford's dominance, the visitors allowed their discipline to slip and with it allowed Swords to keep in touch.
Wexford also has to deal with injuries to Ibar Conway and Chris Walsh. Nicky Lambert made a welcome return for a brief period towards the end of the encounter and had an immediate impact with several good carries. Nicky has been out for a while with a shoulder injury.
Wexford have two weeks to regroup for their all-important home encounter against Malahide which is on Sunday, March 7, at 3 p.m. at home.
This has become the pivotal fixture of the season for Wexford and must demand all their collective efforts and focus. Every support is welcomed.
On another note, Wexford will host Enniscorthy at home in the second round of the Provincial Towns Cup.
This will be an interesting encounter and, as with the next Malahide game, a must-see encounter.
