Seconds defeated by Malahide

Wednesday February 24 2010

WEXFORD HOSTED a resilient Malahide side at Park Lane on Sunday last. Wexford were always up against the odds as the visitors are currently competing hard to take top spot in the Leinster J4 League.

Wexford, however, have enjoyed some good results of late and had realistic aspirations of taking the tie.

Malahide, who field three teams every week, travelled strong and were well organised. They started the better and soon had the home side conceding territory, and this set the trend for the game as the away team always held a slight edge.

After several phases going to the left, Malahide swung the ball right and created a huge overlap, allowing them to score the game's crucial only try on the right.

Had Wexford faltered as a unit and let the heads drop, a big score would have been conceded.

However, as it turned out, the hosts stuck by their convictions and pushed Malahide all the way to the end of the 80 minutes. And while they were always that bit behind on the scoreboard, they certainly gave their strong rivals a good run for their money.

In particular the younger players are improving with each outing and rising in confidence.

Next week Wexford host C.Y.M. at home in a game that they must feel confident of winning but need to be wary at the same time.

Wexford have drawn New Ross at home in the first round of the cup. This means Wexford have two home cup ties and all are encouraged to attend.
