Ethan Boyle and his Republic of Ireland Under-19 soccer colleagues lost the opening game of the UEFA European Championship campaign to Slovenia in Eamon Deacy Park, Galway, on Friday on a 1-0 scoreline.

The Wexford town native and Waterford United stalwart played at midfield in a game that the home side dominated in the possession stakes, but unfortunately they were unable to convert their chances.

Boyle was one of five players from SSE Aitrticity League clubs in the starting line-up, and he came close to getting an equaliser in the 69th minute when Slovenian goalkeeper Rok Vodisek turned his piledriver around the post.

The result meant that Ireland had to beat Latvia at the same venue on Sunday to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the elite phase for the sixth season on the trot. And while Boyle wasn't involved, his colleagues duly delivered with a 3-0 win.

Meanwhile, Ballindaggin United's Sophie Lenehan and her Under-17 women's colleagues learned their opponents in the elite round of the European Championships when the draws were made at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Friday.

They will be heading to France for games against the Czech Republic and Hungary from March 19 to 24 next year.
