Collier gives Ferns the winning feeling

Curracloe United 0, Ferns United 1: Ferns rounded off the season by lifting the MMI Wexford Cup for the third time in five years when overcoming a very brave effort from a young Curracloe side in Bunclody on Sunday last.

A strong breeze did little to affect the players as both sides produced some good passing football on an excellent surface. Chances were kept to a minimum in the firsthalf with both sets of defences dominating and forwards reduced to long-range efforts which were easily dealt with by both 'keepers.

The breakthrough came on 38 minutes when Rachel Collier got on the end of a Leona Breen pass and she calmly slotted the ball past Laura Corrigan in the Curracloe goal.

The second-half saw Curracloe come in search of the equaliser but they could not break down a strong Ferns defence. Their only serious threat came from setpieces but they still found it impossible to score and Ferns held on to lift the cup.

League Vice-chairman, Barry Dempsey, presented the cup to the victorious side while Ferns United's Georgina Moore collected the player of the match award.
