Ferns United's odyssey in the FAI Junior Cup ended in the seventh round when they were beaten by favourites Sheriff Y.C., but not before they had given their illustrious Dublin opponents one hell of a fright, eventually losing out 2-1 after a brave effort.

The Wexford Premier Division side took the lead after just 14 minutes when Ryan Nolan held his nerve to convert a penalty, and they had the better of the opening half.

However, Sheriff's class began to tell after the interval and William Molloy drew the metropolitans level early in the second-half.

Daniel O'Brien then superbly fired in a 25-yard free-kick to put the Dubliners ahead.

Once they had got their noses in front Sheriff never looked like losing their grip on the game and could have stretched their advantage but for some wonderful saves from Ferns goalkeeper John Thorpe.
