Thursday was a very special occasion for recent Youths re-signing Chris Kenny as he scored a hat-trick for the Irish Defence Forces in a 4-1 win over the UK Combined Armed Forces in an international friendly in St. George's Park, England.
England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate was among the attendance as Kenny - back with Youths after a spell with Shamrock Rovers in his home town of Enniscorthy - showcased his talent.
The Irish team was drawn from the ranks of the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps and got off to a great start after 13 minutes when Kenny calmly directed David Long's cross to the net.
And he was on the mark again three minutes later when his blazing shot from outside the box gave the 'keeper no chance. Kenny's hat-trick was completed when he converted successfully from the penalty spot in the 55th minute.
'This is one of the proudest moments of my soccer and Defence Forces career,' Kenny said afterwards. 'It is an absolute privilege to represent my country.'
And he was joined on the winning side by Youths colleague Lee Grace who played at left-back, while Craig Wall of Wexford Youths and another former clubman, Ricky Fox - now back with Shamrock Rovers in his native Enniscorthy - were among the substitutes.
The bench also featured Craig Shortt of Birr Town who had a spell at Ferrycarrig Park.
Kenny will be back with Youths away to Athlone on July 24.
