Masoud earns valuable point
Substitute denies Waterford
Adham Masoud came off the bench to grab a deserved equaliser as Wexford Youths took a point away to high-flying Waterford United in the SSE Airtricity Under-17 Southern Elite League in Ferrybank on Sunday.
Waterford United 1 Wexford Youths 1
The flying attacker made the most of a brilliant Cian Doyle assist to break through the home defence and fire past goalkeeper Eoin Power to give the Ferrycarrig side a much deserved draw.
Confidence was up after an impressive win at home to Cabinteely seven days earlier, meaning Wexford travelled to Waterford, who were unbeaten in four, looking to take the game to their hosts.
What they encountered was a team not too interested in playing football on the deck. Instead United opted for the aerial route into a strong three-man attack. Wexford dealt with it pretty well but did fall behind to an Owen Wall strike in the 33rd minute.
Youths did have chances in the opening half. Ciarán Murphy got to the byline and pulled back for Ronan O'Kelly but a last-ditch tackle stopped the Wexford attacker from netting. Cian Doyle sent a powerful header over the bar while Vincent Quinlan took aim with a couple of pot-shots.
Wexford introduced Danny Doyle in the second-half as the talented attacker stepped up his return from injury. The change certainly worked as Youths were much the better team after the break.
Yet it took until the last ten minutes for them to find a deserved equaliser. They could have won it late on when Eddie Black was unlucky with a header, while United also had a chance to convert in a goalmouth scramble.
All in all it was a good point for the visitors. Next up for Garrett Larkin's side is a home tie against second from bottom Cabinteely. That fixture will be played in Bunclody on Sunday and will kick-off at 2 p.m.
