There was good news for Curracloe's Kevin O'Connor on Wednesday when Republic of Ireland Under-21 head coach Noel King announced his provisional 24-man squad for two upcoming UEFA championship qualifying round Group 2 fixtures against Italy and Slovenia.
The Cork City left-back cum midfielder was among the names listed, with the squad to be reduced to 18 prior to the games. The game against Italy is in the R.S.C., Waterford, on Thursday, March 24, at 6 p.m., while the tie with Slovenia involves an away trip to Koper four days later at 5 p.m.
O'Connor is one of just five SSE Airtricity League players shortlisted, with the others including his new Cork City team-mate, Kilkenny native Seán Maguire, who made a big impression with two goals on his debut against Bohemians.
Also named is Brandon Miele of Shamrock Rovers who had a big influence on his club's 2-0 win over Wexford Youths in Tallaght Stadium on Friday. The league's representation is completed by Dylan Connolly of Bray Wanderers and Seán Hoare (St. Patrick's Athletic).
Kevin O'Connor hasn't featured yet in Cork City's two SSE Airtricity League openers, a 2-0 home win against Bohemians and a 1-0 away loss to Derry City.
However, Rossonian Greg Bolger, a new recruit from St. Patrick's Athletic, lined out at midfield in both but will be taking an enforced break now after collecting a red card in that defeat in the Brandywell on Friday.
