On opposite sides

It's not often that we see two Wexford natives on opposing sides in a major domestic soccer game.

Indeed, we would venture a guess that last Friday was perhaps one of the first-ever occasions when Cork City and St. Patrick's Athletic locked horns in the FAI Cup last 16 tie in Turner's Cross.

Pat's travelled south as reigning champions, having lifted the crown for the first time since 1961 last year with Greg Bolger from New Ross a key figure in midfield.

And he is still filling a similar role for the Inchicore crew, but the bragging rights this time around went to fellow Slaneysider, Kevin O'Connor from Curracloe, who featured as Cork City blitzed the holders on a 4-0 scoreline.

O'Connor was pushed up to the left wing having spent most of the season to date at left-back. He was an injury concern before the game, so no doubt this played a part in the decision of manager John Caulfield to withdraw him after 45 minutes.
