Wexford Youths must now win a playoff if they are to retain their Continental Tyres Women's National League title after falling to hosts Shelbourne in Tolka Park on Wednesday evening.

Shelbourne 3 Wexford Youths 1

Will Doyle's side led 1-0 at the break after Nicola Sinnott swept home from close range six minutes before the interval. Shelbourne had looked dangerous at the other end but the Wexford defence, without international Jessica Gleeson, stood firm.

Youths were dealt a crushing blow when overawed referee Paula Brady blew for a nothing Shelbourne free-kick as Claire O'Riordan was in the process of smashing in a shot off the hosts crossbar.

Five minutes later Shelbourne were level when Niamh Walsh headed in a Siobhan Killeen cross. Provider turned scorer less then two minutes later to make it 2-1 to the North Dublin side.

Brady bottled it again in the 63rd minute when a horror tackle on Orlaith Conlon was punished by just a yellow card. Things got worse for the Dublin official when she fell for Killeen's histrionics in the box and awarded a penalty that Rebecca Creagh converted.

Wexford pressed for a way back into the game but the injury-riddled Youths couldn't respond and Shel's took victory. Details of the playoff are to be confirmed but it's expected to take place on Sunday May 22nd.
