Sharp-shooter John Staples fired Corach Ramblers to Neil O’Sullivan Cup glory with a clinically dispatched double at Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday.
Corach Ramblers 2, St. Cormac's 1
The centre-forward proved a real menace for the St. Cormac’s defence all afternoon in a man of the match display, and when the chances fell his way he calmly finished them with unerring accuracy.
The victory capped off a tremendous few hours for the proud club, with their ladies team capturing the Boland Carpets Cup earlier in the day.
The first-half had mainly been a case of the teams sounding each other out, but the game really came to life after the interval.
The pressure finally told in the 56th minute when Staples ran on to a delightful through ball from Graham Sinnott, and kept his cool to round the goalkeeper and squeeze the ball inside the left-hand upright, beyond the despairing legs of a St. Cormac’s defender.
However, Mick Sweeney showed greater accuracy shortly after with his sweetly-struck left-footed free from just outside the area nestled in the corner of the net.
In the 86th minute Jon Reville glanced a header into the path of John Staples and without breaking stride he collected the ball and expertly finished to the corner of the net.
