Wexford Youths got their SSE Airtricity Under-17 League Southern Division campaign off to a disappointing start with a loss away to Mervue United on Sunday.

Garrett Larkin's side headed west in search of a positive start to their league season and were a little unlucky not to get it after putting in a spirited performance against the hosts.
Youths took the game to their opponents and played some excellent football at times, but it just happened to be one of those unrewarding games for the Slaneysiders.
There was no rustiness from the long journey as Wexford flew out of the blocks and put Mervue under pressure from the off.
It looked like the industry and energy would pay off when they won a penalty in the eighth minute, but talented former Gorey Rangers midfielder Vincent Quinlan missed the spot-kick.
As Youths continued to press a few close offside calls went against the Wexford boys. The sides eventually went in at the interval deadlocked.
However, Ronan Manning put Mervue ahead just minutes into the second-half.
The goal didn't really alter the pattern of the game as Youths continued to dominate. Mervue were reduced to long balls that the Wexford defence was more than capable of dealing with.
In the end missed opportunities came back to haunt Wexford as Mervue wrapped up the points with a second goal late in the game from Aaron Connelly.
Next up for Youths is a home game against Shamrock Rovers, last year's champions, on Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m.
