Wexford Youths 5, Limerick 1: Wexford Youths got back to winning ways in style with a 5-1 drubbing of Limerick F.C. in their SSE Airtricity Under-17 League clash in Hogan Park on Sunday.
The visitors had stretched their unbeaten run to six games when they drew 1-1 with Cabinteely at Ferrycarrig Park the previous week.
And they got off to a great start in Limerick, taking the lead on 12 minutes when Craig Hayes confidently found the back of the net.
Wexford Youths were playing some lovely football and Limerick couldn't cope with the strength of Craig Hayes and the speed of Ivan Meegan and Vinny Quinlan, once the midfield trio of Danny Doyle, Steven Hempenstall and young Michael Carroll started to boss that sector.
It came as no surprise when the dominant Youths doubled their advantage in the 29th minute through the skilful Ivan Meegan.
Things got even better for the Youths just a minute into the second-half when Craig Hayes netted his second and, not to be outdone, Ivan Meegan also completed his brace on 55 minutes to put the Slaneysiders 4-0 ahead.
Danny Doyle then scored the pick of the bunch in the 70th minute when he applied a superb diving header to finish off a wonderful team move.
Limerick did manage to pull a goal back with six minutes remaining but it did little to dampen the spirits of the Wexford side as they extended their unbeaten run to seven games and strengthened their hopes of a quarter-final place.
Wexford Youths travel to take on Cobh Ramblers next weekend, where they will hope to continue their impressive form. The game is on Sunday in St. Coleman's Park at 2 p.m.
