There was no respite for Wexford FC from their dismal start to the league when they were hammered 5-0 by south-east neighbours Waterford FC in round one of the EA Sports Cup in Ferrycarrig Park on Tuesday night.

The visitors never looked back after taking the lead in the 26th minute when David McDaid touched a long ball from Shane O'Connor past the advancing Corey Chambers before rolling it into an empty net.

Former Wexford favourite Gary Delaney doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, heading a cross to the far post by McDaid to the net after an initial brilliant pass from Kenny Browne.

Craig Hayes went close to pulling back a goal on the re-start, but Waterford took over again and eventually saw their dominance rewarded further with three more goals between the 87th and 90th minutes.

Lively left wing substitute Owen Wall had a key role in all three, scoring the first and last while McDaid also grabbed his second in between after Wall struck the crossbar.

Next up for Wexford is their seventh league game against Longford Town in Ferrycarrig Park this Friday, April 7, at 8 p.m.
