Wexford Youths claimed a historic first ever Continental Tyres FAI Women's Cup with a penalties victory over Shelbourne in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.

Wexford Youths 2 Shelbourne 2 AET Youths win 4-2 on penalties

The champions scored all four of their spot-kicks in the shoot-out, while 'keeper Tamara Furlong saved from Noelle Murray and Shauna Newman hit the crossbar, as Youths finally saw off their Dublin opponents.

Despite dominating the game, Will Doyle's side fell behind when Siobhan Killeen curled Shelbourne into a 55th minute lead. However, in the last minute of added time Ciara Rossiter poked over the line after a goalline scramble to send the game to extra-time.

Youths continued to push forward and finally took the lead in the 105th minute thanks to Maria Delahunty's strike from the edge of the box but they needed the lottery of penalties following a last-gasp Dearbhaile Beirne goal.

The sides will meet again this coming weekend when Shelbourne host Youths in a league game that could prove vital come the end of the season
