Wexford Youths lost the chance to return to top spot in the SSE Airtricity First Division when they slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Athlone Town in Lissywollen on Friday, July 24.

The visitors produced a very flat first-half display and conceded a goal in the ninth minute when Daniel Purdy beat Graham Doyle with a left-footed shot.
And it got even worse just three minutes later when Athlone doubled their lead courtesy of Gavin Boyne.
The leaders were reduced to ten men in the 16th minute when goalscorer Purdy was red-carded for a challenge on Stephen Last who had to be replaced.
Despite that, Youths conceded again in the 38th minute when Philly Gorman headed home Aidan Friel's cross at the near post.
Hopes of a comeback were boosted in the 57th minute when Andy Mulligan whipped in a cross from the left and Danny Furlong headed it home, but that was as good as it got for Youths who face another tough trip away to Shelbourne next Friday.
