Wexford Youths hit the front against the run of play in Tallaght Stadium on Monday, August 15, but the strength of the Shamrock Rovers midfield gradually wore them down as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in this SSE Airtricity Premier Division tie.
The lead goal arrived in the 19th minute when Danny Furlong converted a penalty after Paul Murphy was brought down in the box by David O'Connor.
However, the Hoops equalised quarter of an hour later after Shane Dunne fouled Seán Boyd on the edge of the area and Gary McCabe provided a stunning finish from the free-kick which left netminder Graham Doyle with no chance.
Just four minutes later Youths were 2-1 behind after Brandon Miele played a one-two with Dean Clarke and finished beautifully to the far corner of the net.
The midfield control exercised by McCabe, the creative Miele and experienced holding player Pat Cregg, was too much for Youths to deal with, and the home side wrapped up the win in the 70th minute when Seán Boyd headed Trevor Clarke's cross from the left to the net.
Youths lost centre-half Gary Delaney to a second yellow card, while Rovers introduced Aaron Dobbs, their teenage sensation from Enniscorthy, who came close to scoring against his fellow Wexfordmen on two occasions.
Next up for Youths is a home clash with Sligo Rovers in the third round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup in Ferrycarrig Park at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 19.
