Wexford hosting U17 tournament
WEXFORD IS playing host to the prestigious inter-provincial Under-17 tournament over the October Bank holiday weekend, with games taking place in Ferrycarrig Park, Gorey Celtic, Bunclody, Curracloe United, Gorey Rangers and St. Joseph's.
All four competing teams are staying in the Ashdown Park and Amber Springs Hotels in Gorey, with the games being scheduled for Friday night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. All referees are from the Wexford branch.
The Irish Under-17 international manager usually attends, with a view to selecting a squad for a friendly International made up of home-based players who will have impressed during this tournament. The Leinster squad hasn't been finalised yet, but there are hopes that at least one Wexford player will feature on home soil.
The full fixtures are - Friday, October 26, Munster v. Leinster, Ferrycarrig Park, 7 p.m. (Brian Fenlon); Friday, October 26, Connacht v. Ulster, Gorey Celtic, 7 p.m. (Nicky Boland); Saturday, October 27, Leinster v. Connacht, Bunclody, 1.30 p.m. (Mark Hogan); Saturday, October 27, Ulster v. Munster, Curracloe United, 3.30 p.m. (Damien Donovan); Sunday, October 28, Munster v. Connacht, Gorey Rangers, 11.30 a.m. (Noel O'Connor); Sunday, October 28, Ulster v. Leinster, St. Joseph's, 11.30 a.m. (Jimmy O'Neill).
Meanwhile, the first group game in this year's Oscar Traynor competition is against Waterford on Sunday, October 28, in Belvedere Grove at 2.30 p.m.
The draw was made recently, with the six groups divided on a regional basis.
The Wexford League will feature in Group 4 along with familiar foes in the Waterford & District League, Kilkenny & District League, and Tipperary Southern District League whom they will meet in that order, with all matches to be completed by December 31. Unfortunately, Wexford have just that one home game against Waterford on Sunday week next, and will be on the road to face Tipperary and Kilkenny.
It is envisaged that the second series of games will be completed by the end of November, and series three by the end of December.
