Asperger help

Wednesday March 17 2010

A ONE-DAY training programme to help parents of children with Asperger Syndrome will be held in the Stanville Lodge Hotel on Saturday, April 17.

Among the topics to be covered will be: common communication difficulties associated with Asperger's and strategies to overcome them including personal space, turn-taking, playing with others and routine, and preparing your child for the future.

There will be an open question session to enable parents to seek advice on specific issues.

The training day has been organised by Helen Hartigan, who recently established a mutual support group for children with Asperger and their families at the U-Play Cafe in Clonard.

According to Helen, the waiting in Wexford town for children needing speech and language therapy is four years.

'This is un-aceptable as children with Asperger Syndrome need very early intervention if they are to have any kind of normal interaction with their peers,' she said.

Helen said she contacted several politicians and councillors recently to highlight the issue but only one, Brendan Howlin, replied.

'If the HSE cannot provide these vital services then parents need to educate themselves on how to work with their children at home and gain and insight into how speech and language therapy can help children to reach their goals in life'.

For a booking form text your name and address to 087 6713591 or email hartiganhelen@eircom.net. The last date for the training programme is April 3.
