Thrilling end to sports quiz
Wednesday March 17 2010
THE CHILDREN'S Hospital sports quiz came to a thrilling conclusion on Monday of last week, with the experienced St. Senan's team edging out young pretenders The Pike in an epic final.
St. Senan's were four holes down with four to play, but staged a great comeback and won eventually on the 19th, the first hole of the play-off.
The St. Senan's team comprised Bobby Bent, Tony Mahoney, Micheál Doyle and Jim Stafford, with The Pike led into battle by Richie Rogan and ably assisted by Trevor Doocey, David Dodd and Emmett 'Disher' Doyle.
Beaten in the semi-finals were last year's winners, Horizon Financial (Larry D'Arcy, John Redmond, Michael McGovern and Pat Lindsay), and Castletown G.A.A. (Joe Sullivan, Anthony Masterson, Dec Carty and Dennis Fitzpatrick).
The beaten quarter-finalists were Forth Celtic (Barry Sinnott, Phelim O'Connor, Mick Farrell, Noel Quirke); Silverbacks (Paul McCarthy, Shane Lucey, Brendan Leahy, Pat Mulcahy); All Gunners Bar One (Eamonn Doyle, John Barnes, Ciarán Nolan, Dean Heffernan); and Ferns G.A.A. (Paul Doyle, Eddie Cullen, Jamie Dunbar, Tom Dunbar).
Chief organiser Niall McDonnell thanked all the teams for their magnificent support in this, the ninth running of the quiz. He thanked all the venues including Whitford House Hotel where the final was staged, and also acknowledged the generosity of James Tomkins of Suzuki Motors, the sponsors of the prizes.
