A teenager from Carne travelled to America yesterday (Monday) to represent Ireland at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA.

Fourteen years old Brendan Thompson is a member of the 35th Wexford Kilmore Scouts and is the only County Wexford scout taking part in the international scouting event.

Prior to his departure, he was presented with a Wexford flag to take with him, by the Mayor of Wexford Cllr. George Lawlor.

The World Scout Jamboree is taking place from July 22 to August 2 at the Summit Bechtel Family Scout Reserve in West Virginia which is managed by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Thousands of scouts from all over the world are attending the 24th World Scout Jamboree there this week, which is co-hosted by Scouts Canada, Boy Scouts of America and the Association of Scouts of Mexico on the theme of 'Unlock a New World'.

Brendan, a student at Bridgetown Vocational, is one of 400 Irish scouts participating in the event and all have been allocated special uniforms to wear, including shorts and a wide-brimmed hat.

The Wexford teenager will take part in a range of ceremonies and cultural activities at the Jamboree and was also selected to serve as a member of a Model United Nations during his time there.

After the Jamboree, the Irish scouts will travel to Canada to visit Niagra Falls and Toronto.

A son of Emmet and Olga Thompson, Brendan's brother Sean, also a scout, was honoured with a bravery award for rescuing a young boy from drowning while he was on holiday in Turkey in 2016.
