Danone Nutricia have confirmed that 34 short-term positions have been lost at their Rocklands factory in Wexford town. All of the workers involved were on short term contracts, which the company says are not being renewed at the moment.

Subsequently, 34 workers will now face a frantic search for employment when their stint at the factory runs out on September 2.

A spokesperson for Danone said that while it was regrettable, they would re-evaluate the situation further down the line and hopefully be able to re-hire some of the staff.

'Unfortunately a number of short-term contracts are due to come to an end,' the spokesperson said.

'Sadly that's the nature of the beast, but it's certainly something that we will be looking at and will re-evaluate down the line.'

A manufacturer of specialised infant and toddler milks, Danone is an important employer in Wexford, providing jobs for some 200 people. The company opened a €26 million production line at Rocklands back in 2014.
