A business woman from Enniscorthy has launched a kickstarter funding page for a new, locally based ice cream company with the aim of creating a brand that promotes Irish ingredients and dairy as well as bringing something new and unique to the Irish market.

Denice Downey grew up here and has always had a passion for food and art.

Shortly after she completed her secondary education her family moved to Adelaide, South Australia, which she describes as 'an adventure'.

'I studied art and ceramics at art college but my first love was always cooking,' she told this newspaper.

After college she worked for a time in a Sydney restaurant cooking a variety of dishes and desserts but she was always experimenting with food products and mixing culinary cultures.

She moved to Perth and worked in a restaurant called Cafe Marina which is located in the exclusive Mindarie Keys harbour area.

There she created her own recipes and such was her success that when the owner of the restaurant sold it she was asked to move with the owner to a much bigger restaurant on the west coast highway.

'There began a three-year journey perfecting my culinry skills,' she said.

An opportunity to return to her native country arose and she jumped at the chance and having come back to Ireland she started up her own catering company and focussed specifically on tending to the catering and food requirements of leading rock acts like Robbie Williams, U2, The Corrs, Neil Diamond, REM and Snoop Dog in addition to catering at major festivals such as Oxegen, Electric Picnic and Slane.

Having also set up cafes in Tenerife, Belfast and Dublin, Denice is no stranger to success.

However, her focus now is firmly fixed on Naturally Ireland Ice Cream.

'I have started a kickstarter funding page and my goal is to raise €35,000 so I can invest in machinery, staff, packaging and product development so I can take my ice cream designs from my kitchen,' she said.

All of her products come in biodegradable containers and in return pledges to her campaign can be as little as €10.

In return backers can choose rewards such as merchandise and a choice of ice cream creations.

Denice also plans to develop Keto friendly, non-dairy and non-sugar creations.
