There was great excitement in Rosslare Harbour as a Wexford based firm launched a brand new solution that will allow the underwater repair of damaged sub-sea cables, saving a fortune in the process.

AERSUB was designed by Ferns based company Irish Sea Contractors with the goal of reducing the cost of repairing cables on the sea bed by up to 50% in water depths up to 200 metres. There was a growing demand for this technology in the offshore wind power cable market and they were delighted to have Minister Michael D'Arcy officially launch their innovation for them at the Europort.

As well as lowering the cost of repairing underwater cables, AERSUB will also cut repair times in half. Traditionally, cables would have to be lifted from the seabed in order to be repaired.

Irish Sea Contractors also announced the development of a 'sub-sea jointer' training programme which includes a 'Sub-sea Jointing Academy' in Co Wexford to train the personnel required to carry out the power cable repairs in AERSUB. The sub had been deployed in the days before the launch to provide a demonstration as to how it works.

Founded in 2010, Irish Sea Contractors is owned by Managing Director David Kinsella and his family and they specialise in the area of underwater engineering solutions. The company also has a subsidiary business in Searchwise, based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Having been involved in offshore renewables for more than a decade, the company really spotted the need for their latest innovation.

'I feel like the team I have coached and poured my heart and soul into these last few years has just won the county GAA finals,' Mr Kinsella said at the launch. 'I am incredibly proud of all of the Irish Sea Contractors team and family who have made this a reality and look forward to completing our first customer cable repair using AERSUB soon.'
