Wexford Haulier Verona Murphy has been awarded for services to the transport industry at the annual Fleet Transport Awards.

The Ramsgrange woman, who is Managing Director of DruMur Transport Limited and President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), was presented with the award at a lavish ceremony in Citywest last week.

The Fine Gael by-election candidate was delighted to have been chosen.

'I am bowled over to have been selected by my peers for this award,' she said. 'The industry is facing a period of major disruption with Brexit on the horizon and I will continue to work on behalf of the IRHA to ensure that the concerns of our members continue to be highlighted and represented.'

Ms Murphy also pointed out that there's a significant opportunity for growth in the industry.

'Despite the challenges facing the industry, there is also ample opportunity for growth that I believe we can maximise to protect our jobs and create new ones,' she said. 'It is in this vein that I have recently visited Le Havre port as part of a delegation to discuss opening up a direct route between Rosslare and Le Havre. The benefits to such a route would be massive for the haulage industry and the South East region. These are the kind of opportunities I am determined to pursue on behalf of the industry.

'I look forward to continuing to promote the haulage industry and ensuring that we are equipped to meet all the upcoming challenges and be able to adapt to grasp upcoming opportunities,' Ms Murphy concluded.
