Wexford town is included in the next LEADER programme

By David Tucker

BUSINESS and community groups in Wexford town will be able to take part in the next LEADER programme which will be worth almost €10 million to the county over the next five years.

Seamus Doran, from Wexford Local Development, said that as part of the planning for the delivery of the next LEADER programme the bodies managing and delivering LEADER in County Wexford are now drafting a countywide plan known as a Local Development Strategy.

This plan will identify the priorities for the LEADER Programme over the next five years.

Wexford Local Community Development Committee are working in partnership with Wexford Local Development and Wexford County Council to deliver the LEADER Programme, which will be worth over €9.8 million to County Wexford between now and 2020, under the three LEADER themes of Job Creation; Rural Environment and Communities and Social Inclusion.

LEADER is a European-funded rural development strategy which has been operational in Co. Wexford since 1991. In that time it has invested over €25 million into 1,000 community and business projects throughout the county.

The next LEADER programme will be particularly important for businesses and community groups from the entire county which will now be entitled to apply for LEADER grant aid.

This will provide a vital boost to Wexford town which was ineligible to apply under previous programmes.
