One of Rosslare's best known Tidy Towns volunteers was highly commended as a SuperValu Community Hero as the results of this year's national Tidy Towns Competition were announced in Dublin last week.

Dara Meyler is a familiar sight around Rosslare at this stage, out in his hi-vis jacket picking up litter and ensuring that his local area stays beautiful.

'He is in my opinion an exceptional young man who sets a very high standard for those of his generation,' said Treasurer of Rosslare Tidy Towns, Ray Flynn. 'Dara always has a sunny disposition, he has an attitude and dedication rarely seen in a person of his age. He faces daily challenges in his life and yet finds time to care and serve his community.'

'A number of years ago Dara approached me expressing concern about the litter in the vicinity of where he lives and walks. He asked what he could do about it. I advised him on health and safety issues and we provided a hi-vis jacket, picker, gloves and bags. Quietly and without fuss Dara patrols the area collecting the rubbish that thoughtless people discard. He is a shining example of volunteerism and a role model for all the younger members of our community.' A service user at Windmill Therapeutic, Dara is a source of great pride to Rosslare Tidy Towns, his friends and family and he was delighted to be presented with a SuperValu voucher at Windmill by Alan Murphy of Murphy's SuperValu in Rosslare.
