Alice gave up her time to help other people

The late Alice Kavanagh.
The late Alice Kavanagh.

The Barntown community was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Alice Kavanagh (née Byrne), Ballyhine on Friday April 15 following an illness.

Alice devoted her life to caring for others and will long be remembered for her generous spirit.

Originally from the Taghmon Road, Alice was the only girl in a family of six. From an early age, she worked tirelessly to look after those who were sick or simply, just in need of a bit of company. No matter how busy she was, Alice was always willing to give up some of her time to help other people. In later years, she supported both of her parent and brother through illness.

Alice met her beloved husband Thomas in 1973 and the pair went on to marry the following year. They had four children Martin, Mary, Tommy and Alice. Family meant the world to Alice and she remained in close contact with all of her children. She also enjoyed going on trips around Ireland with Thomas.

Alice enjoyed the simple things in life. Nature was one of her main passions and she marvelled in its wonders, no matter how small. Her garden was her pride and joy. She would spend hours tending to flowers and plants and got great satisfaction in watching them grow and flourish. Alice was regularly to be seen in Kilmore, where she would go to watch boats and birdlife.

Dancing was another one of Alice's pastimes. She would go wherever her feet would take her, be it Clayton Whites, Camross or further afield. Alice enjoyed the dancing for the social aspect as much as for the dancing itself. She had a wide circle of friends in the dancing community and will be fondly remembered in many dance halls for years to come.

Alice was a good-natured, selfless and honest woman who loved life and had a wide circle of friends. Her presence in the community will be greatly missed, but her memory is sure to live on through the many stories about her kindness.

Alice's family would like to thank Luke's hospital, Beaumont hospital, Wexford Hospital's palliative care nurses and Abbeygale Residential Care for the tremendous amount of work, love, care and kindness shown to Alice.

Alice will be sadly missed by her husband Thomas; children Martin, Mary, Tommy and Alice; siblings Gee, Pat, Tony and Dermot; grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

May she rest in peace.
