Having been selected to represent their country at the European Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships in Israel next month the girls from Gymstars in Barntown took their talents to the centre of town last weekend.

A total of eight team members have been chosen from Gymstars and they will travel as part of the Irish squad to Holon in Israel next month.

However, because travel and accommodation to the Middle Eastern country is particularly expensive, the Gymstars team have been busily raising funds to help finance their trip to the finals.

Geraldine Gainford explained the thinking behind the event: 'It was basically a way of raising funds for the girls' trip, we had a raffle with prizes to be won; there were vouchers donated by local businesses, tickets for the Spiegeltent, a meal in Clayton Whites.'

The eight girls, who are Isabella Gainford, Aoife Prunty, Alison Doyle, Abby Mulligan, Aoibhe Ormonde, Katie Nolan, Eve Kinsella and Mair Williams also performed some of their acrobatic feats for a delighted audience, and the presence of Missy Fortune and Baroness Von Boomdea from the Lantern Theatre added further colour to the spectacle.

Mayor of Wexford, Cllr George Lawlor was also in attendance to add his support for the girls, and Geraldine revealed that there would be further fundraisers before the girls jet out in late October.

'We're having a table quiz in the Porter House in Castlebridge on Thursday evening and then we're doing a dress rehearsal at the Gymstars Club on October 19,' she said.
