€4,000 not enough for charity painting

A bid of to €4,000 failed to secure a very valuable painting which went under the hammer for a good cause recently.

Auctioneer Robert Rackard presided in his Caim showroom where pride of place among the 600 lots on the day was a picture of race horse Storm Cat by English painter Ester Barrett. The plan was that the proceeds of the sale would be handed over in full to assist jockey JT McNamara who suffered severe spinal injuries from a fall suffered in the UK. The prize painting entitled 'One Cool Cat' was presented for sale by local resident Jim Maloney who has family connections with the stricken rider.

'It was not enough,' said Robert Rackard of the leading offer on the day. He confirmed that the attractive work of equine art remains for sale to someone with around €6,000 to spare. The auctioneer indicated that he was delighted to handle the auction of a valuable piece, but only on the understanding that he took so much as a cent in commission.

'The money will go direct to JT McNamara,' he confirmed. The painting is familiar to customers of Hayes public house in Enniscorthy, where it hung on the wall in the past.
