Irish Pride responds to sun with more buns
Even businesses as big as the Irish Pride bakery in Taghmon have to be nimble and ready to respond to changing conditions. At the height of the summer weather, the staff there must to alter their production schedule to meet demand from the barbecue sector. In response the altered state of the market, at the height of the heat wave, they were turning out 2,000,000 (yes, two million) burger buns per week. Pass the ketchup, please.
Swamps last year... now this
Sometimes it's hard to appreciate the difficulties under which people operate. Other people such as cattle farmers, for instance. Last summer, they were driven to distraction with their herds kept indoors because the fields outside had been reduced to swamps by continuous rain. In the sunny summer of 2013, they have found it next to impossible to drive electric fence poles into the earth and mark off paddocks for grazing because the ground has been hard as bell metal.
