'Ashes To Ashes', with its references to Major Tom, is regarded as a sequel song to Bowie's 1969 hit 'Space Oddity'. Though it is now an iconic track from the era, and one of the most recognisable eighties classics, 'Ashes To Ashes' was not an exceptional chart performer. Of the major music markets, it only reached number 1 in the UK, failing to even break into the Billboard Hot 100 in America. In Ireland, 'Ashes to Ashes' peaked at No. 4. The song is noted for its video, a groundbreaker that cost over £250,000 to produce, making it at the time the most expensive ever. Visually arresting, it featured Bowie in a gaudy Pierrot costume alongside other 'Blitz' kids, who founded the New Romantic movement, including Steve Strange of Visage.
