€360,000 for rural road repairs

County Wexford has been allocated €360,000 in funding for badly-needed improvements to small local roads in rural areas.

The allocation has been approved under the Local Government Scheme (LIS) which is designed to support the upgrade of non-public rural roads.

The funding will allow for the repair and improvement of small roads and laneways leading to local people's homes and businesses that are not under the normal maintenance of Wexford County Council.

Announcing the Wexford allocation, Minister of State with responsibility for Defence Paul Kehoe said these roads provide vital access to homes and farms as well as amenities such as lakes and rivers.

The Department of Rural and Community Development will provide up to 90% of funding through the local authority, with the remaining contribution coming from local residents, or the Council in the case of roads leading to public amenities.

Wexford County Council must provide details of planned improvement projects to the Department by March 23.
