Two long serving parishioners were honoured by the community in Curracloe at a recent celebration during Sunday Mass.

The family of the late Marie Neville was presented with a posthumous Benemerenti Medal for Marie Neville, who had been a full time Sacristan at St Margaret's Church, Curracloe.

Ms Neville, who sadly passed away earlier this year, took over the role from her good friend and neighbour Kitty Murphy in 2008.

She served for many years on almost every committee in the area, most recently the Parish Council.

Fr Denis Kelly presented the award to Marie's daughter Áine, and sons Francis and David. He said that Ms Neville had been held in very high esteem by the entire parish.

'When it was originally suggested that she be honoured with a Benemerenti Medal, it was one that was met with great support. Our only regret is that Marie herself was not here to accept the honour,' said Fr Kelly.

The second presentation on the day was to Mary Murphy who was retiring from her duties in opening and closing the church each day, a job she carried out for many years, supported by her son George and her neighbours, the Cullen family.

Fr Kelly said: 'The enormity of her daily commitment was acknowledged on the day and her work was greatly appreciated by all, particularly the cheery, positive manner with which she carried out her work.'
