Congratulations to Liam Parnell and Odhran Kehoe who got their first taste of success after winning the U9 Doubles County Championship. Anthony Butler and Enda Minogue were winners of the U16 Doubles County Championship.
The adults also had a successful campaign. Galen Riordan won the Junior County Championship title in an impressive win over Darren O Toole, 21 18, 21 15. Michael Rossiter won the Emerald Masters Singles in 21 8, 21 1. The club's third adult title was won by Billy Rossiter and Sonny Sheil in the Diamond Masters Doubles. I had the great pleasure to be invited to attend last Thursday's after-school musicsession in Scoil Mochua and was entertained by 23 talented children playing a variety of instruments including keyboards, tin whistles, banjo, guitar, buttonaccordion, flute etc under the guidance of multi-instrumentalist Mr. Hamish Stuart, aided by Miss Nóirín Lenehan both of whom give of their free time to promote traditional musicand musicianship among the pupils of our wonderful local primary school.
Of course young local teacher, Mr. Kevin Nimmo is himself an accomplished musician and he was also there encouraging the youngsters in their endeavours. "Mol anóige agus tiochaidh sí" is certainly true in Scoil Mochua!
A newly composed ballad, entitled "The Ballad of Oulart Hill" was performed for the gathering by Kevin Whitty, friend of Mr. Stuart. Words and music for this six-verse ballad were written by Mr. Whitty who is a renowned musician and winner of All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil tin whistle competitions.
I was delighted to see the way the children rose to the challenge of learning the new piece, how they concentrated on what they were doing, their enjoyment of working and playing together and the very obvious respect and admiration they had for their inspirational teachers and guest. To bring the session to a close the group played "Five in a row" composed by Mr. Stuart to commemorate Oulart-The Ballagh Senior Hurlers' historic five-in-a-row of senior hurling championships, 2009-2013.
