Glynn N.S. News

Europe Day: On 13th May the pupils of Glynn NS had the pleasure of meeting former MEP Avril Doyle and celebrating Europe Day.

To prepare each class learnt about Europe-various countries, capital cities, famous landmarks and Eurovision songs.

We made the flag of each country in the EU, children said "hello" in the language of the flag they were holding.

While the song "A Little Peace" was sung, four 6th class girls did a gymnastics display.

Two of our students spoke in their native language-one from Poland and the other from Germany.

After this Avril spoke to the children about the EU and some of her experiences in the European Parliament. She then answered questions from some of the children.

Avril presented prizes from the art competition which had been held featuring famous European landmarks. The winning pictures are on the school website

Féile: On Tuesday 12th May we had the pleasure to be visited by Bobby Goff, Pat Quill, Méabh Quill & Lee Chin to promote the football Féile. Méabh & Lee spoke to the school about their experiences, answered questions and signed autographs.

Communion: Congratulations to all the children who received their first Holy Communion on Saturday 16th May and thanks to all involved in preparing the children for the ceremony.

It was a good week on the camogie front with 3 wins from 3 in championship-The u.12 camogie team travelled to Oulart on Friday night and put in a gutsy performance to seal victory at the final whistle.

Our U.14 girls played Rathnure on Monday in Rathnure and came out on top after an excellent display of hurling.

We had a fantastic win over St. Martins in U.16 Premier camogie championship on Thursday evening in Killurin 3-06 to 2-02. The Glynn-Barntown girls put in a strong performance in every position with tight defending and classy scoring.

Well done to Laura Dempsey part of the Co. Intermediate camogie panel which drew with Kilkenny on Saturday 0-7 to 1-4.

Our u10s were out twice this week -first against Oulart The Ballagh on Wednesday in Hurling and Friday v Sarsfields in football. All players worked hard in their games putting their skills to the fore.

The busy week, of football in particular, in the club continued with our three u12 boys football teams playing Tuesday evening in Killurin. The Blue team were narrowly defeated by Gorey A team, the Green Team beat Gorey B team while the White team performed really well against Ferns but were beaten by 5 points in the end. It is great to be able to field in such numbers. Thanks to all involved.

Our U.14 footballers played at home on Thursday evening v Volunteers but were unlucky in the result.

Both of the U.16 boys footballers played championship on Monday last. The A team played Shelmaliers in Hollymount and won comfortably while the B team played Cloughbawn at home but didn't get the hoped for result.

Glynn Barntown was well represented on the Co. Minor Football Panel on Saturday with James Stafford , Fionn Cooney, Ciarán Joyce, Stephen Lynne, Matt Doyle, Ben O Shea and Kevin Mahony all togging out against Dublin in Bellefield in the Electric Ireland, Leinster Minor Football Quarter Final. Wexford gave a great account of themselves staying close on the scoreboard but two Dublin goals in the last 10 mins put an end to their journey.

Michael Laffan Memorial Tournament: Our first Michael Laffan Memorial Tournament takes place next Saturday May 23rd in Killurin 10am-2pm. This is an Inter-county and club hurling tournament for u10/11's in which it is hoped that up to 300 players from six different counties will take part on the day, in a feast of hurling as a fitting tribute to a great Gael-the late Michael Laffan Snr.
