Proclamation Day

Oulart National School organised a very impressive Proclamation Day on Tuesday 15th March, the day that the National Flag was hoisted (by Mr. Hamish Stuart) to honour the gallant men and women of 1916.

The pupils had composed their own Proclamations for 2016, listing their aspirations for the future. Miss Leanne Hanrahan co-ordinated their effort to combine all their ideas into a single proclamation which was read by a number of pupils.

Renowned local historian and author, Brian Cleary was guest of honour and he mentioned the important roles played by the Oulart de Lacy brothers, Michael, Larry and Ned in 1916 and he read out the list of Volunteers that were active in the area in that period. Mr. Cleary presented Scoil Mochua with a copy of Emmett's Proclamation of 1803 along with copies of a book written by Bob Brennan, leader in the Athenaeum in Enniscorthy during the Rising. These books had been donated by Oylegate native Jim Bolger (horse-trainer), whose aunt was married to Bob Brennan who later worked in the Irish Diplomatic Service in the USA.

Scoil Mochua's music group entertained the guests and visitors with lively music throughout the afternoon while each class grouping, under the direction of their teachers, presented various poems and songs associated with 1916 as well as an explanation of the origins of our Tri-Colour and the protocols attached to displaying the National Flag.

The proceedings concluded with a rousing rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann as the music group, pupils, staff and visitors joined forces to sing Peadar Kearney's words that were written some years before 1916.

The Parents' Association of Scoil Mochua provided delicious refreshments, including a cake decorated in the colours of our Brat Náisiúnta and Brian Cleary was invited to cut the cake before it was enjoyed by the assembly. Proclamation Day in Scoil Mochua was indeed a triumph and great credit is due to the principal and staff, Board of Management and Parents' Association and to the brilliant, confident and talented children who are obviously benefitting from the wonderful educational opportunities that are available to them.
