Bridgetown Handball

Date for your Diary: We are holding our annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, November 1, at 8.15 p.m. in Bridgetown Vocational College. We would appreciate if the parents/guardians of our juvenile members could attend this important meeting. Congratulations to Michael Sheil and the rest of the Wexford boys' under-14/15 60 x 30 Team of Six, who beat Kilkenny in the Leinster Final last Friday night at New Ross HBC.

In the team format every point counts and Michael and his partner Conor Dobbs from St Joseph's were the last pair into action against Seán Barron and Killian Lawrence. Wexford held a slender three point lead after the first two doubles matches, and Michael and Conor built on that lead in their first game, winning it 15-10.

That left Wexford in an eight point lead going into the last game of the evening, While this was a decent lead it was unchartered waters for the pair as they had never represented Wexford in Leinster before. They did not show any nerves as they closed out the second game 15-12 to record a famous victory.

The 2018 County 40 by Championships is already under way and in the under-16 Singles Michael beat his schoolmate Gavin Leacy from Ballymitty on a 2-0 scoreline, while at under-17 Callum Smithies got the better of his club colleague Richard Fenlon on a similar score. Matthew Phillips had an exciting win over Rory Cassidy, coming from behind to win 2-1. Matthew then came up against Gary Duggan, with Gary coming out on top in that one. Rory lost to Michael Keegan from Ballymitty, while Richard went down to Quentin Kehoe from Taghmon, both played well and picked up a good few aces.

In the Adult County 40 by 20 Championships Bridgetown Micheál Busher (Junior B) has started well with two good wins in Singles and one in Doubles with Bob Byrne. Ciaran and Brian Busher (Junior C Doubles) have one win and won defeat, both matches going the distance. Eamonn Codd has one win and one defeat in Junior C singles, while Brian and Jack Roche have started with two defeats. It was good to see Jack Roche back playing again, and he is improving with every game, so still early days and plenty of time to recover. Bob Byrne lost his first Junior B Singles game.

In the team event, Bridgetown, made up of Micheál, Bob, Brian and Eamonn, just lost out in a very tight game against Kilmyshall's A team. This game went down to the wire with Kilmyshall coming from behind to snatch victory.
