Around the Districts: Ballymore-Mayglass, Our Lady's Island

Ballymore-Mayglass: Annual barbecue - The Bargy Vintage Club will host our annual barbecue in the Coopers Inn on Saturday, July 13, starting at 6.30 p.m. till late. As usual, we will have lots of tasty barbecue food with a variety of good music that will be provided by Tom and Michelle Murphy, the Murphy Brothers and the well renowned and very popular Point Blank.

All money raised from our barbecue will be divided between St Fintan's GAA Club and the refurbishment of Ballycogley Hall. Both organisations are doing trojan work in our parish, something which we should all feel very proud of and very worthy of your support. We will also have lots of spot prizes on the night and anyone who wishes to sponsor a prize please call 086 2550704. Tickets will be available from all our club members. Here's looking forward to seeing you all there on the night.

The jackpot now stands at €4,600. There is also a match-three prize of €200 up for grabs each week and Corrinia Sheil and Aoife Cullen shared in this prize. The numbers drawn were 6, 24, 33 and 34. The second in the series of three draws in the CLG Loch Garman Club and county fundraiser was held on May 29 with 50 prizes in total but sadly supporters of the St Fintan's club failed to feature on the list of winners. Ordination

Congratulations to our local Lady's Island man Ricky O'Connor who became the first man to be ordained in the Church of the Assumption, Our Lady's Island, when Bishop Denis Brennan performed the ceremony recently. At 30 years of age he became the youngest to be ordained this year and said his first Mass in Clonard Church. We wish him every good wish in his future appointments.

St Fintan's GAA

The St Fintan's hurling team travelled to Clongeen to take on the home team in the EEW All County Hurling League and struggled to cope with the power of the home side. Though soundly beaten, the Ballymore-Mayglass men battled to the very end. The football team had a home venue when they took on St Mary's Rosslare and found themselves two goals in arrears after just three minutes and but for this lightning start by the Mary's this was a closely contested encounter with the Rosslare men taking the spoils on a 5-12 to 2-12 scoreline.

St Fintan's Ladies

Well done to the under-12 girls that hosted Bannow in round three of the football league and took the spoils with a strong team performance. A big thank you to Nicky and Maurice for the pitch set-up and to all the mams and dads for your continued support for this great bunch of girls. It was heartbreak for the under-14 county team which included St Fintan's players Aoife Devereux and Abigail Clarke that bowed out of the all-Ireland championship following a 3pt defeat at the hands of Tipperary. This was a fantastic achievement by this group of young stars reaching the last four of their division. Team management, mums and dads and supporters are very proud of you all.

St Paul's AC

What a weekend for the club. We had five athletes competing in the Leinster Juvenile Track and Field Championships last weekend in Tullamore and they returned with six gold and two bronze medals between them.

Maeve was first up on Saturday morning in the under-18 100m Hurdles where she won our first gold. Next up was Erin in under-18 Shot where she also finished in first place. Gergely was in action in the under-18 Discus where he also finished in first place for our third gold of the day. Maeve was back on the track for the 400m, a new event for her, where she finished in third place. Next on the track was Danika in the under-17 800m. Danika ran a great race in a very competitive field where she won third place. Maeve was in action again in the under-18 Long Jump later in the afternoon where she won her third gold of the day after finishing in first place. After a much- earned rest, it was back for day two. Ciara kicked things off with the under-16 800m, where she competed well in a very strong field. Gergley was back in action in the under-18 Shot where he had a great series of throws with four of them over 14m and on his was to picking up a first place finish he also set a new personal best of 14.52m. Lastly was the under-18 High Jump where Maeve won her third gold of the weekend.

Congratulations and well done to all. It's on to the National Championships now over the coming weeks. Thanks to all parents, who took time over the last few weekends to bring the athletes to the championships in Tullamore. Without your help and support, all the hard work and training would not have reaped rewards.

We held our last 'Mini Olympic' evening of the season on Wednesday. We had a fantastic turnout with 42 young athletes taking part. Congratulations and well done to all and a special thank you to all parents who helped out.

Last weekend all roads led to Dublin for some of our athletes. On Saturday, June 22nd, Gergley competed in the Tailteann Inter-Provincial Games as part of the Leinster Schools Team. He competed in both the Discus and Shot.

Maeve competed on Saturday and Sunday in her first National Youth Heptathlon, where she covered seven events over the two days. Emma, meanwhile, competed on Saturday and Sunday in the AAI Games in the Hammer and Discus. All three competitions were held in the Morton Stadium in Santry.

Our end-of-season barbecue will take place at the track in Rosslare on Saturday afternoon, June 29.
