Cross Country

Congratulations to St Killian's juvenile athlete, Emma McCarthy who had a brilliant race at the Adamstown open Cross Country event on Sunday week last. She stormed home in first place in the under-12 category. Noah and Zach Deering both ran great races and gained valuable experience too in the under-10 and under-11 categories.

Senior Athletics

One of the highlights of the county athletics calendar took place on Sunday week last in a balmy Coolgreany as the elite athletes of Wexford toed the line for the county senior cross country championships.

There was a real sense of anticipation this year as SBR were out to shatter a national record for being the first Irish club to win 10 national men's senior team county titles. They had all their big guns in place and it was going to be a real cracker against United Striders Athletic Club, who came so close last year. The crowd were rewarded with a really hard fought and close battle with United Striders just about coming out on top to win the title to huge fan fare from their loyal supporters.

The individual race was equally tantalising with Ger Forde showing his excellent recent form to take the title but the drama was taking place for the second place. St Killian's own Niall Sheil found himself in a real dog fight with Enda Cloke of Slaney Olympic Athletic Club. Enda looked in control for four of the five laps and things looked ominous for Niall with Enda having a 50 meter lead heading into the final lap. Niall looked like he got his tactics spot on and he took the lead with half a lap to go. Niall powered ahead finishing really strong to take a superb second place to the delight of the St Killian's supporters. His coach Pavel Kolesnikov was first on hand to congratulate him and it was great to see the coach and athlete enjoy the moment and reap the rewards of their hard work.

The general consensus was that it was the tough but fair cross country course that was going to expose any weakness, but then again that is what you expect in Cross country and it certainly is not for the faint hearted.
