Around Wexford town

Historical Society - The Wexford Historical Society holds its first lecture of the year on Wednesday, January 15, at 8 p.m. in St. Michael's Hall, Thomas Street, Wexford. The topic of the talk is 'The de Lacy Family of Oulart'.

This notable family, from as early as 1907, made an exceptional contribution to the Irish Revolutionary period in many fields, most particularly in journalism, in education, in the 1916 Rising in Enniscorthy and in the evolution of Irish Indian Revolutionary co-operation.

The speaker on the night will be Brian Cleary, a noted author and distinguished member of Wexford Historical Society and proud Oulart man.

This lecture should appeal to historians and those interested in this prominent and renowned Wexford family. All are welcome.

Creative Writing Master Classes for Teenagers

Join The Irish Times' best-selling author and Wexford Libraries' Reader in Residence Caroline Busher for a series of creative writing master classes.

This course is perfect for teenagers who want to learn more about the craft of writing - whether they are already writing a novel or want to know where to begin. The class will consider the importance of setting, characterisation, plot and dialogue. Participants will be given the opportunity to discuss their work and will also receive advice on getting their work published.

The classes run on Tuesdays from 4.30-5.30 p.m. on January 7, 14, 21 and 28.

HEAR/DARE Application Information Day

The application information day provides an opportunity for you and/ or your parent(s)/guardian(s) to drop in to meet with a member of the DARE team to discuss your application. Drop in for information on the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) Schemes. There will be presentations on HEAR and DARE schemes at 11.30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

UCD staff will also be available to answer applicant queries.

Write club

The first meeting of Write Club for 2020 takes place in Red Books in St Peter's Square on Tuesday, January 7, at 7 p.m.

New members are welcome to attend and there will be refreshments on the night.

Admission is €3.

Baby reflexology

A baby reflexology course begins on Wednesday, January 8, at 10.30 a.m. in Coolcotts Community Centre.

The course is designed to ease colic wind and reflux, relax and soothe the baby, ease teething and sinus pain, encourage bonding and boost immunity.

It is also a great way get out and meet other new parents and spend some lovely relaxation time with your baby.

The cost is €45, including all your notes, charts and oil.

Tango therapy

'Golden Age Tango Therapy' takes place on Friday, January 17, at 7 p.m. in Wexford Arts Centre.

Tango was born as a social dance in Argentina and Uruguay over 100 years ago by immigrants, many of whom were Irish. The unique Tango embrace, which reminds of the caring arms of a mother, and many other attributes of Tango are invaluable when dealing with many of life's challenges.

This activity facilitates personal growth and long-term positive change.

Tickets are €15.

Luke Kelly

On January 11 the memory and music of a true Irish musical legend will be celebrated at The National Opera House as 'The Legend of Luke Kelly' take to the stage.

Luke Kelly has left an indelible mark as being the greatest folk artist of the 20th century.

Led by Chris Kavanagh, 'The Legend of Luke Kelly' have performed all over Ireland as well as abroad, in countries such as the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. The gig starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are priced at €25.

Paint by the pints

On Thursday, January 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Sky and the Ground invites you to Paint by the Pints.

This is a fun-filled evening where guests are guided step-by-step through creating their masterpiece. Don't worry if you haven't painted since primary school - that's the fun of the event.

All materials are provided and a free drink is included to get your evening started on the right note.

Each canvas completed at an event translates to €1 donation to the art supplies fund for the non-profit organisation Children in Hospital Ireland.

Mind yourself

Think Psychology is delivering a 16-hour programme entitled 'Mind Yourself' this February.

The programme is designed to assist you to understand yourself and others better; to learn skills to deal with the demands of life more effectively; and to strengthen the relationships in your life that are important to you.

The course begins on February 4, runs until March 24 and comprises a two-hour class every Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Art club

Returning on Saturday, January 11, the Wexford Arts Centre's Art Club for children aged 7-11 provides participants with the opportunity to learn about the technical aspects of making art while working with the centre's team of professional artists.

This season, children will paint, draw and create mixed media pieces. A maximum number of participants of 16.

Aquafit

Taking place on January 9 from 11 to 11.45 a.m. in Club Vitae in the Clayton Whites Hotel, this aerobic-based exercise is in the pool.

It takes place in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere and you don't need to be able to swim to take part.

Suitable for all adult age groups.

Photography final

On Wednesday, January 8, the Visit Wexford Photography Competition hosts its final in Clayton Whites Hotel at 8 p.m.

There will be 20 finalists with their photos on display and four judges.
