DARE TO BE DIFFERENT
ALI MURPHY ON USING FASHION AS A WAY TO DEFINE OURSELVES
FASHION IS A general term for a currently popular style, especially in clothing, footwear or accessories. When you walk down the streets of Wexford town you get a mix of different styles, yet there is a majority of people who will always stay secure, wearing the long cardigan and black trousers or the common Ugg's jeans and hoodie combo. Some just want to blend in with the crowd.
But you have to understand the power of clothes. They can change not only your personality but how people respond to you. Clothes express parts of your personality you want to show off. They can give you the ability to be different, to stand out. Use fashion as your weapon, first impressions are crucial.
There is a clear difference between looks on the catwalk and looks on Wexford town. Designers use the catwalk to show the world their creations, it's a chance for them to daring with their designs and make that all important impact on their audience so they walk away inspired by what they have seen. Designers have the pressure of competition and they must always be in-trend, whether its autumnwinter or spring-summer. The most recognisable fashion designers include Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Chloe, Dolce&Gabbana, Prada and Dior. Though there are hundreds in the world today. It's a constant competition to outdo each other to with their designs
Of course we know in Wexford there's no competition, you're not being judged by the world on what you choose to wear into town on a Saturday afternoon. But we still try to keep in trend. Some will stay comfortable inside the box and wear what is safe, others won't bother at all, they'll just throw on what's comfortable and leave it at that. But in the last couple of years a large amount of people have started to stand out. Local shops like New Look, Penny's or A Wear have provided the foundation to a more stylish looking Wexford. More is available these days and people are starting to be more adventurous and daring with what they wear. Catwalk styles are coming through but in a more subtle and tone down way. This season the top 10 fashion trends on the catwalk have been turtlenecks, high collars, military, patchwork, quilting, thigh high boots, wide pants, fringe, gloves and knitwear. All these trends have come through onto the streets of Wexford this winter. Indicating a strong link between us Wexford people and the fashion catwalks of the world.
There are many celebrity idols in the fashion world including Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Cheryl Cole. Many people tend to look to such celebrities then styling together an outfit, magazines are founded on the basis of this. Fashion links up everyone, whether you're a multi-millionaire or a student in Wexford, it gives you a likeness.
