Leo Power, Summertown celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday night last at a party in Meyler's Millhouse surrounded by family, friends and neighbours along with about thirty traditional musicians and singers from near and far.
Leo's lifelong friend and fellow musician, the renowned flute player Michael Griffin paid Leo a glowing tribute recalling his long musical career, and events over his lifetime including Tacumshane Ceili Band winning first prize at the County Fleadh in Ferns in 1962.
Michael was followed by Cllr. Ger Carthy who recounted many landmark events in Leo's long life from his upbringing in Reedstown, his marriage to Joan (nee Hartley) in the early 1960's, his purchase of the first combine to enter Co. Wexford, his involvement with Tacumshane Dramatic class, and his contribution to the social, cultural and sporting life of Lady's Island and the wider community, also his involvement with Tacumshane Ceili Band.
All the remaining members of that famous Bank were in attendance-Frank Byrne, Michael Griffin, Pat Byrne, Sean Carroll and of course Leo himself. He also spoke of Leo's contribution to the inception of the local Comhaltas Brach in the early 1950's and recounted Leo's opportunity in 1963 to perform for U.S. President John F. Kennedy on the quayside in New Ross.
Ger presented Leo with a gold medallion and Certificate of Recommendation on behalf of the Director General of Comhaltas for his contribution to Irish culture. Tony Power, on behalf of the Power family, recalled Leo as being more like a brother than an uncle during their early days in Reedstown, and his delight at seeing his family and grandchildren all around him.
He had a special welcome for Brendan Tobin and John Murphy and special thanks to Kevin Newport for providing transport over the years. He thanked Meyler's musicians and all present. Frank Byrne, one of ther original members of Tacumshane Ceili Band made a presentation to Leo and offered some kind words of recognition of Leo's great achievements.
