WEXFORD'S newest easy rider is a German physiotherapist who is hiring out himself and his Segway personal transport device to anyone looking for a novel way to promote their business.

Ulf Stahlberg is becoming an increasingly familiar sight cruising the streets, the sight of the Segway attracting a lot of interest.

Ulf said he and his wife Tatjana got the idea during a holiday in Lithuania last year.

'We saw some Segways when we were on our holidays and thought they would be interesting for people in Wexford over the summer,' said Ulf.

When the couple returned, Ulf bought and imported a new Segway for Germany, the device setting him back almost €9,000.

'I hire it out for promotional work and advertising and things like handing out leaflets. It gets a lot of attention,' said Ulf.

He said it wasn't that hard to drive a Segway – all you needed was a sense of balance.

'You need to stand on it first and balance it and then you can drive it – it takes about five to 10 minutes to learn to balance and then about an hour to drive it.'

The Segway is fitted with three gyros for balancing and has a range of about 30 km.

Once competent, a driver can achieve speeds of 30 km/h, although slower speeds are recommended for learners with differing braking and turning rates for different skill sets.

Ulf said that in Ireland, a Segway is classed between a wheelchair and a bicycle and doesn't require a license to drive.

He said he was already planning to bring in at least one more Segway to give people the opportunity to ride them in tandem at places like Johnstown Castle, where he shows off the device at weekends.

Ulf first came to Wexford in 2007 and now runs his physiotherapy business and Segway hire under the same brand name, 'Body in Balance'.
