Vols' lottery winner gets a big cheque in Gaynor's
One lucky player of the St John's Volunteers GAA lottery was presented with a cheque for €5,350 in Gaynor's Bar after he won the club's latest jackpot.
Derek Whelan from Wexford town was joined by his ticket-seller Vera Meyler from Wygram, club chairman Dermot O'Brien, Coiste ná nÓg secretary and club PRO Louise Duggan, and club secretary Brian McGrath for the presentation of the cheque at his local pub last week.
The popular lottery has been running for six years and organisers hope that they will have a big jackpot to coincide with the club's 125th anniversary celebrations in November. You do not have to be a club member to take part in the draw - Derek is a friend of ticket seller Vera, and has played the club lottery for a long time.
When asked by the Vols PRO Louise Duggan what he intended to do with the money, Derek replied: 'I think my wife has a few plans for it!'
Louise explained that the lotto, the winner of which is drawn at a different pub each week (Gaynor's, The Wexford Arms, Jim McGee's, Simon's Place, and Dixie Barrett's), was a great fundraiser with money going towards the development of their underage and adult structures. The Vols, she said, had been named as a mentor for the Healthy Club initiative and they hoped to develop facilities at their grounds in Páirc Charman.
