New playground and car park open at Shelmaliers GAA
The inclement weather couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of those gathered at Shelmaliers GAA Club last Sunday afternoon.
There to witness the grand opening of the club's new car park and community playground the crowd braved the torrential downpours for a landmark day in Shelmaliers GAA history.
After some ceremonial speeches, led by Club Chairman Myles Doyle, and the cutting of the ribbon by young Oran Gately, the playground was finally open for business.
'The kids were straight in there as soon as it was opened,' said Myles. 'It's a community playground for the whole area not just for members of the club.'
Funded primarily by the LEADER programme, which is overseen by the Wexford Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) and is delivered in partnership by Wexford Local Development and Wexford County Council, the new facilities were also partly funded by the club themselves.
And, according to Myles, both projects were completed with a minimum of fuss.
'They were both done quickly, we have brand new car parking now and it couldn't be safer. We would have done a couple of fundraisers ourselves but most of the funding came from the LEADER programme.'
Myles then paid tribute to one of his colleagues who had worked tirelessly to ensure the projects were delivered on time.
'We have our own Development Committee and Sheila Roche was the main one from there to push these projects on. There was a lot of paperwork involved and she would have dealt with all of that. She followed it through right to the end,' Myles said.
